Niagara Falls is one of the most spectacular gifts of God to mankind. Its magnificence and sheer beauty take one’s breath away as the mighty waters roar down the rocks.

The Niagara Falls is comprised of the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. The Horseshoe Falls are about 173 feet high and 2600 feet wide. The American Falls are 70 feet high and 1060 feet wide. The intensity of the water flow is up to 202 thousand cubic feet per second in the peak season. As the Niagara falls face Canada, the best view of the Falls is available from the Canadian shore.

The Niagara Falls together with the Niagara River and the North American great lakes were formed by the Wisconsin glaciations as long as 10,000 years. The latter were created under the impact of the continental ice sheet moving across the area and digging lakes out of rivers and channels like a bulldozer.

After the ice had melted, the Great Lakes watered the Niagara River. Later on the river cut through the north cliff in a manner that eventually shaped out the Niagara Falls.

Touring the Niagara

The most popular season for touring the Niagara Falls is summer since the falls are most spectacular throughout the day and in the evenings. The falls are illuminated with floodlights on both sides for several hours in the evening.

About 29 million visitors are expected to come to the Falls in 2009. One of the most celebrated tourist attractions at Niagara Falls is the cruise boat named ‘Maid of the Mist’ after an ancient character of Indian Myths. The Maid has been carrying its passengers through the whirlpools under the falls since 1846.

Niagara Falls is a favorite shooting spot for Hollywood film-makers. It is featured in such movies as Superman II and the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’.

Visiting the Niagara Falls enjoying in its spectacular magnificence is a dream of many, and it’s easy to see why.
